There may not be any obvious casualties in the third season of The White Lotus thus far, but that doesn’t mean that death isn’t looming over every episode. Themes of death and rebirth are a big part of the season and the very first scene shows a flashforward of an active shooter situation at the resort still to come. Though we don’t yet know who is responsible for the gunshots heard echoing throughout the prestigious White Lotus Thailand resort, or who will end up in body bags by the end of the season, that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun speculating. And who better to theorize with than White Lotus alum Meghann Fahy?

While chatting with Fahy at the Den of Geek SXSW studio about her upcoming movie Drop, we got to ask her if she was tuning in this season and if she had any ideas about who might be checking out in a body bag. “I think it’s gonna be more than one person,” she says. “I don’t know who I think it is, yet, but I think that [it’s going to be multiple].”

});

Drop director Christopher Landon even chimes in, agreeing that the series’ opening seems to hint at “mass casualties” this season.

Despite the threat of more characters than usual dying this season, Fahy hasn’t been scared off from returning to The White Lotus in the future. “Oh my God, of course,” she says when asked if she’d be willing to come back and reprise her season 2 character down the road. “I love Daphne and Cameron, and I would super be down.”

Aside from Greg (Jon Gries), who we already know is sketchy and played a role in Tanya’s (Jennifer Coolidge) death last season, the most volatile of the White Lotus guests so far this season are Timothy Ratliff (Jason Isaacs) and Rick Hatchett (Walton Goggins). Timothy is currently being investigated by the feds back home for a business deal he made long ago. He has already stolen a gun from resort security. Even though it doesn’t currently seem like he views the gun as anything other than a way out of this situation for himself through suicide, he’s clearly becoming more and more unstable as the season goes on.

Rick came to Thailand to find the man who killed his father. This journey may have taken him outside of the resort, for now, but we already know the man has ties to the resort and the land it’s on. Who knows what dominos Rick’s revenge may knock down in the days to come.

Now that Belinda (Natasha Rothwell) has recognized Greg from their time in Maui together, she is likely in his crosshairs. She’s already connected the dots and realized he’s wanted for questioning in Tanya’s death, he could go after her and/or her son when he arrives to try and cover his tracks.

And these are just the obvious characters. Plenty of others are becoming loose cannons as their days at the White Lotus carry on. Who knows how things could play out by the finale as more secrets and inner turmoil are revealed. Fahy is absolutely right that all signs are pointing to more casualties this season. We’ll just have to keep checking in to The White Lotus each week to see who the unlucky victims are.

Adolescence Episode 3 Is Extraordinary Television

The only thing more worrying than being a teenager? Raising one. That’s a take-home from new Netflix drama Adolescence, which follows the aftermath of a 13-year-old’s arrest on suspicion of murder. It’s an exceptional four-parter driven by a desperate question: how could something so horrendous happen, and what is to blame? Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham’s […]

It’s out there now. As all the rades are reporting, Sadie Sink, best known for her breakout role as Max Mayfield in Stranger Things, will join the cast of Spider-Man 4. While Marvel Studios has yet to confirm the news, fans are already speculating about which character Sink might portray in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next Spider-Man story.

Admittedly, just about every detail of Spider-Man 4 is anyone’s best guess at this time. Still, Sink’s acting style, look, and Spider-Man’s current status in the MCU do suggest some intriguing possibilities. With all things considered, and all disclaimers applied, here are some of the most notable characters that Sadie Sink could play in Spider-Man 4

Jean Grey as Dark Phoenix in the comics

});

Jean Grey

One of the most popular fan theories at the moment suggests that Sink will portray Jean Grey in the upcoming Spider-Man film. Granted, that theory seems to be pushed hardest by those looking for major Marvel characters with striking red hair that Sink could play (hey, fan-casting isn’t always the deepest pursuit!), but a closer look at this situation reveals a more compelling argument.

Kevin Feige has already said that he’s interested in incorporating X-Men characters into existing  MCU projects as Marvel Studios builds toward their first proper X-Men films. If they are interested in casting Sadie Sink as Jean Grey in the long term (which would seemingly be a pretty great choice), then she certainly could debut in a Spider-Man storyline that has been rocked by multiverse shenanigans. That said, Jean Grey and Spider-Man team-ups have been relatively rare in the comics over the years. If Jean Grey is going to be introduced to the MCU via Spider-Man 4, then that movie may have to revolve around Spider-Man’s introduction to the larger mutant community.

Kitty Pryde in the Comics
Marvel Comics

Kitty Pryde

Another X-Men casting possibility, Kitty Pryde actually has a well-established prior relationship with Peter Parker in various Marvel Comics lore. The two have complementary combat skills, matching attitudes, and even dated each other for a brief time in the Ultimate universe.

It’s that more intimate relationship which makes Kitty Pryde such a fascinating casting possibility for Sadie Sink. Given the hard reset Peter’s life took at the end of No Way Home, it’s easier to imagine Peter meeting Kitty Pryde in his new life, striking up some kind of relationship with her, and exploring new possibilities as well as being properly introduced to the entire mutant community. Sink’s age and character oeuvre to date make her a seemingly perfect fit for Kitty Pryde, though it’s reasonable to wonder if Pryde is enough of a major name to secure one of those coveted “X-Men cameo spots” that Feige hinted at.

Mary Jane Watson in the comics
Marvel Comics

Mary Jane Watson

If you subscribe to the “Sadie Sink must play a red headed character in the MCU” philosophy (as many seem to do), then you must consider the Mary Jane Watson possibility.

Yes, casting Sadie Sink as MJ in Spider-Man 4 would seemingly require the use of multiverse shenanigans or a small army of convenient plot points. Then again, these are the Spider-Man MCU movies we’re talking about! Multiversal shenanigans and convenient plotting is the name of the game! However it may happen, it’s hard to deny that Sink is seemingly a good fit for the classic Mary Jane role. It would be intriguing to watch Peter explore a relationship with another Ms. Watson now that he and Zendaya’s Michelle Jones-Watson have softly been split by the events of the previous film. That said… two MJs? In this economy?

Spider-Gwen in Across the Spider-Verse
Sony Pictures

Gwen Stacy

When you hear that a notable actress has reportedly been cast in a major role in an upcoming Spider-Man movie, it’s only natural to think “Gwen Stacy.” The death of Gwen Stacy is one of the most pivotal moments in Peter’s life, though the narrative evolution of the recent Marvel Spider-Man movies made it highly unlikely that we’d ever see Stacy in an MCU film outside of, perhaps, a cameo or No Way Home’s throwaway reference to the character.

Nowadays though, things are a bit different. If Marvel is interested in giving fans a full Gwen Stacy storyline, they would pretty much have to take advantage of this unique time when Peter’s life has effectively been reset and he’s free to explore a variety of possibilities that would have previously seemed impossible. It’s a stretch, but Gwen Stacy true believers have renewed reason to hope.

Felicia Hardy as Black Cat
Marvel Comics

Black Cat/Felicia Hardy

Black Cat has to be one of the betting favorites for Sink’s Spider-Man 4 role. While there have been rumors of a Black Cat appearance in a Spider-Man movie for about as long as we’ve had Spider-Man movies, we’ve yet to see the formidable thief or her alter-ego Felicia Hardy in a live-action adventure. (Sorry, Felicity Jones is never 100 percent confirmed to be Felicia Hardy in her blink and you miss The Amazing Spider-Man 2 cameo.) Not only would now be a great time to bring Black Cat into the MCU, but Sink is seemingly in a fantastic position to potentially continue playing that character in future MCU projects.

If you subscribe to the idea that Sink is likely playing some kind of potential love interest who creates a complication in Peter’s life (again, a safe bet given everything we suspect about Spider-Man 4 and this casting), then Black Cat arguably makes the most sense. She would be the easiest addition to the movies from a logistical standpoint, and her antihero status could fit the darker direction that Peter’s adventures will likely take now that he has gone to great lengths to upend his life.

Spider-Woman in the comics
Marvel Comics

Spider-Woman

This is seemingly the least likely casting possibility for Sadie Sink, but we should still talk about the Spider-Woman in the room.  Bringing Spider-Woman into the MCU would not only give Peter Parker a new partner in crime-fighting but could open the door to bigger “Spider-Verse” storylines to come. If you also suspect that Sink may end up making multiple MCU appearances, then casting her as Spider-Woman would seemingly open the door to major future possibilities.

Whether or not Sink would play one of the existing lore versions of Spider-Woman (perhaps Jessica Drew or the aforementioned Gwen Stacy), or a new version of the superhero is another matter entirely. There’s also the issue of Sony’s Spider-Man pictures and their reported interest in a future Spider-Woman project. While it seems likely that the spell Strange performed at the end of No Way Home will have consequences that could create crossover potential from a plot standpoint, the legal rights may be far more challenging to navigate. So while this is one of the least likely possibilities, a Spider-Woman appearance would enable some fascinating storyline options in the long term.

One of the most interesting cultures in the world of The Wheel of Time is that of the Aiel people, who dwell in the desert to the east of the Dragonwall mountain range. Like those in the West, they have a prophecy about the Dragon Reborn, but to them he is the car’a’carn, or Chief […]

Australian writer-director Zak Hilditch knows exactly what to say when people ask what his next film, We Bury the Dead, is about. “Oh, it’s a Daisy Ridley zombie movie,” he laughs while in an exclusive conversation at our SXSW studio. But Hilditch also knows there’s a lot more to his new film than that. “There […]

Why Has Sci-Fi TV Stopped Imagining Our Future?

There is no better way to start a long and tedious science fiction fandom fight than by asking for a definition of the genre. But to keep things simple, let’s go with the Oxford Dictionary’s wording: “Fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or […]

The post Why Has Sci-Fi TV Stopped Imagining Our Future? appeared first on Den of Geek.

The casting process for any movie is a difficult thing, one that involves nuanced factors such as figuring out schedules, availability, chemistry, or even just aligned visions. And then there are times where it just clicks. The many-hyphenated musical and artistic talent Flying Lotus had exactly such a moment while looking for the lead of his new sci-fi/horror genre-bender, Ash. He had a moment when he met Eiza González.

“It was the first thing she said to me,” Flying Lotus recalls of their earliest conversation while visiting the Den of Geek studio at SXSW. “She said, ‘You know, the script reminds me of Silent Hill.’” The smile practically bursts from the director’s face when the memory comes back. “I was like she’s perfect!”

When you see the finished film, the influences are apt. Set in a distant future on a strange alien world, Ash is a bizarre vision filled with dread, mystery—and even a dizzying first-person action sequence where González’s protagonist, a woman named Riya, must defend herself against a hostile force. Suddenly, a movie told entirely from Riya’s subjective point-of-view literalizes it in a fight scene with scalpels, fire, and perhaps a martial arts legend.

“It reminded me of Silent Hill 2,” González specifies about the whole film. “I used to play Silent Hill avidly and [Ash] really reminded me of that vibe. [And this] energy was always something that I wanted to do, and I loved the first-person perspective in movies. It just gives you a sense of being in it, and also creates so much anxiety. I thought that was dope.”

cnx.cmd.push(function() {

});

The connection between Ash and iconic video game imagery isn’t entirely an accident either. As FlyLo confirms, he worked with gaming tools when designing visuals for the film: “I spent a lot of time learning Unreal Engine and trying to learn visual effects because I wanted to do some pre-visualizations, and I just wasn’t satisfied with my drawings,” he explains.

Yes, that’s a unique approach for film development, but Ash is an unique take on the proverbial haunted spaceship movie. “The script [written by Jonni Remmler] came like a jigsaw puzzle,” Flying Lotus observes. “It didn’t have to be constructed that way, but it just happened to be constructed in a way that was like, ‘What is this?’”

When Ash begins, González’s character Riya awakens on a desolated shuttle with no clear memory of how she got there or even who she is. All she knows for certain is the planet outside is bleakly oppressive, overcast in menacing psychedelic reds and purples. Yet that seems pitcuresque when compared to how seemingly all of Riya’s crew onboard the ship has been wiped out by… something.

“The movie is from Riya’s perspective, and the colors and the visual tone is a reflection of her headspace,” the helmer says about his movie’s evocative look. “I don’t want to spoil too much, but it corresponds to what she’s dealing with emotionally.”

“It’s purposeful,” González agrees. “The director has a visual idea, and we had measured every single part of where her fevers are coming, why they’re coming, and how the colors correlated. That became a roadmap for us to dive into the performance.” It also proved to be an expressionistic way to help the star build a character who due to having amnesia doesn’t even know herself.

“She’s sort of like a newborn baby,” González says. “It was very tender and vulnerable for me as an actress, because I felt like a little girl in many of these scenes, and I think you can see it, especially with Aaron.”

The Aaron in question is Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul, an thespian who González has been friends with for years, and whose sense of warmth and familiarity created a great wellspring to build what is ironically a much more strained dynamic onscreen.

“This [script] came to Eiza and I’s desk at the same time, so it was just nice to have each other’s back from the beginning,” Paul tells us about what is almost a two-hander aspect to the film. While Riya doesn’t know anything that is going on, Paul’s character Brion seemingly has all the answers, although he comes into the film as his own mystery.

“When he shows up, he’s been orbital monitoring around the planet, so he hasn’t been with the group for some time,” Paul says. “He’s been on a solo journey in his spaceship by himself doing God knows what. But then he gets an SOS call from [Riya] and he shows up and the entire crew is massacred. So he’s just trying to figure out what the hell happened but then, also if he can trust her.”

Much of the appeal about Ash, though, is about mystery and tone, the unknown and dread. That seeps into even the musical score, which of course is a crucial component for a filmmaker who is also a musician, producer, and the film’s composer.

“It’s funny because I had a vision for it originally, but that changed when I started cutting the movie together,” Flying Lotus says of the film’s hypnotic soundscape. “The original thing I wanted to do just wasn’t working. I had to try a bunch of different stuff. I threw different sounds at the wall, and I started [to become] really obsessed with Halloween at the time. I was watching John Carpenter‘s stuff quite a bit, and I just thought about how when he did Halloween he was up against it for time, and he had to do this soundtrack pretty much by himself. I tried to feel that spirit and thought to myself, ‘What can I do alone in New Zealand with minimal gear? How do I do that thing and still bring something new to it and make it interesting to myself?’”

Whether dealing with the visuals or the music, those types of questions matter because Ash takes advantage of the freedom offered by genre movies—as well as independent cinema.

“Independent filmmaking is challenging,” González points out. And with Ash, she says “here comes someone with a vision and an exciting story. I have been really happy to see that the independent filmmaking is taking a cool turn, because that’s how you create new styles, new visual imagery. That’s how you bring a fresh take into filmmaking.”

For Flying Lotus, he’s just happy to make a genre movie to connect with the audience in a new way. “Genre films are the movies you want to go see on Friday night. Some of them may be forgettable, but you just want to have a good time sometimes and escape the crazy world that we live in.”

With Ash, however, it seems the intent is to escape one crazy world in order to find something crazier, more bizarre, and just maybe dope as hell.

Ash premiered at SXSW on March 11 and opens in theaters on March 21.
