This article contains spoilers for Yellowjackets season 3 episode 3.

Yellowjackets has always been a show of collective symbolism. The forest speaks to the girls on the team, and the audience is left to listen and wonder what it all means. From the mysterious symbol in the first season to the sounds bellowing out of the trees at the beginning of this season, watching this show has been similar to deconstructing all of the colors and objects in a novel during a college English capstone course.

The latest episode, “Them’s the Brakes,” ups the stakes for the season and introduces a plethora of new symbols while giving more hints about older ones. From the Sopranos-esque dream sequence at the end of the episode to the creepy ice cream shop Van (Lauren Ambrose) and Tai (Tawny Cypress) investigate, it’s time to decipher what exactly is going on in Yellowjackets right now. Let’s get to it!

The Sopranos’ Big Pussy Makes an Appearance

The main storyline in this episode is the girls’ discovery that Coach Scott (Steven Krueger) is alive and hiding in a cave after Mari (Alexa Barajas) returns from an encounter with him in the previous episode. Assuming he burned the cabin down at the end of the second season, the girls are thirsty for answers and an insatiable desire for revenge.

Shauna (Sophie Nélisse), Van (Liv Hewson), and Akhila (Nia Sondaya) are almost to Coach Scott’s location when they seemingly disappear into a dream-like trance that fans will be familiar with in construct if they enjoyed older HBO classics like The Sopranos and Six Feet Under. They say that dreams are a window into a character’s inner being, but most of what happens in these scenes feels outlandish and hallucinatory.

Shauna dreams of interacting with her stillborn baby and Van is trapped inside the burning cabin. Akilah’s night in the forest includes a run-in with a talking llama that is voiced by Sopranos actor Vincent Pastore (the actor who played Big Pussy). Diehard fans will probably remember Pussy talking to Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) in a dream sequence as a fish. Perhaps the llama is a representation of the girls’ guilt for their misdoings so far such as cannibalism. The creators of Yellowjackets might just be hinting at their characters’ psyches through the legendary mob drama of the 2000s.

Who Is “The Man With No Eyes”?

“The Man with No Eyes” has been in the show for its entirety, but this spooky dude has only shown up in Tai’s storyline so far. We finally find out where the man originated from when Tai and Van are relaxing on the couch one night and a classic ice cream commercial comes on for Ozzie’s Homemade Ice Cream Parlor.

Tai is shaken by the revelation that so many of her deathly fears and associations with morbidity have come from something she had forgotten from her childhood. She immediately takes Van to the abandoned ice cream shop to investigate, but the bigger reveal is how the sinister figure might just be haunting the entire team going back to their days stuck in the wilderness.

Viewers were led to believe that the man was only significant to her up to this point, but the dream sequence at the end with Shauna, Van, and Akhila introduces the frightening figure into their subconsciousness, too. The man is stalking the teens outside of a classroom in their dreams. I certainly wonder why the man was only in Tai’s mind so far if the other girls are dreaming about him now?

Much of the ambiguity in the show has revolved around the mysteries of the forest. Is the wilderness actually supernatural or is it all in the girls’ heads? The source of the eyeless man being an ice cream mascot does more to convince me that maybe the symbol means something different to every character.

Just because the ice cream shop is where Tai’s encounter was with the Man with No Eyes doesn’t mean her teammates saw it there first. Fans will need to be creative and solve the puzzles on their own for the time being. The only certainty is that this man is a forebear of hopelessness and bad fortune for the Yellowjackets.

What Does the Fox mean?

Instead of learning more about the Man with No Eyes, Tai and Van find a fox inside of the dilapidated ice cream building. There hasn’t been any reference to a fox yet in the series, so it’s yet another mysterious symbol being introduced before we have answers to the meaning of the other ones. Astute literary readers and young Millenials who chanted “Swiper, No swiping” at their TVs during the days of watching Dora the Explorer will know that foxes usually represent theft, deceit, and slyness.

I wonder if both the fox and the Man with No Eyes are connected as one complete symbol of the way the wilderness continues to steal the well being of the Yellowjackets even decades after their return to civilization. The present timeline meanders around most of the time, but the one certainty is that these women will not let their pasts die. The trauma of the forest is a thief of the present.

Try Calling the Ice Cream Shop Phone Number

During the commercial for Ozzie’s there is a phone number that comes up on the screen to call the ice cream shop. Knowing that fans love nothing more than interactive Easter eggs, it would be a huge letdown if nothing was on the other end of the line in real life. Like any curious viewer, I called (732) 858-5242 to find out what this place is all about.

The phone call flips back and forth between a cheerful voice and a haunting, depressing one. Ice cream flavors, lots of static, and encouragement to call back later are included in the call. The Reddit superfans have plenty of thoughts on what the phone call means and whether we can learn anything about the Man with No Eyes, the ice cream shop, or the fates of the characters through the phone. There is nothing inherently creepy about an ice cream shop, so the significance of these symbols of references are once again probably just figments of Tai’s imagination. Hopefully the writers explore this further and even update the phone call for the fans throughout the rest of the season.

The first three episodes of Yellowjackets season 3 are available to stream on Paramount+ now. New episodes will premiere Fridays on Paramount+ and Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on Showtime.

Kathleen Kennedy is reportedly stepping away from Lucasfilm at the end of the year. Suits LA Cast: Meet the Lawyers, Clients, and More of the West Coast Spinoff

Suits LA may not be the first attempt at a spinoff of the hit USA Network series Suits, but it is the first since the original series became a streaming legend on Netflix. It’s been nearly six years since Suits ended, and this spinoff is taking not only taking us from New York to the […]

Up until now, we’ve been thoroughly teased by sneak peeks of the upcoming second season of Andor. From interviews with the cast to small glimpses in Disney’s 2025 preview, there have been a decent amount of crumbs to keep us excited for the story to come. Today, however, we’ve finally been served a full trailer outside of D23, and there’s a lot here that leaves us hungry for more.

});

While there’s not a lot of new information shown, we do get to see a lot of familiar faces and a closer look at what their stories might entail this season. From the return of Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) and Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) to a potential Chandrilan celebration, there’s plenty to unpack. If you haven’t already, give the trailer below a watch, and then read on to check out our breakdown of the most intriguing bits.

Yavin 4

For the first time since Rogue One, we get to see Cassian (Diego Luna) on Yavin 4 as the hustle and bustle of the rebel base moves all around him. Series creator Tony Gilroy previously revealed that the show would be making the journey to this familiar planet this season, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t still excited to see a glimpse of it here. Yavin 4 becomes the home of the Rebel Alliance and is a crucial backdrop in the fight to come, though we’ve yet to really see the base in its early days, as we might this season.

Cassian Steals a TIE Avenger

Previous teasers showed us a glimpse of this updated version of the TIE fighter and of Cassian in the cockpit, but now we get to see more of it in action. Why Cassian appears to be stealing this ship has yet to be revealed, but this trailer shows him flying it over a field to take out what is likely some kind of Imperial envoy. There’s also a scene further into the trailer that seems to show him struggling to escape with the ship as it bumps up against the ceiling of an Imperial hangar amidst a barrage of Stormtrooper blaster fire. This is already looks like one of many exciting action sequences this season, as the fight between the Empire and its resistance escalates.

Saw Gerrera

Speaking of escalating resistance, Saw Gerrera is set to return this season. He had a tenuous relationship with Luthen (Stellan Skarsgård) last season, so who’s to say where these two might lie when season 2 picks up five years later. Saw Gerrera has always been an outlier as far as rebel cells go, often opting for a more violent form of resistance than some rebels are comfortable with. But as Cassian says at the beginning of the trailer, “we’re in a war,” and war makes it a lot easier to cross lines in the name of freedom. Saw is an important part of Rogue One, and it’ll be interesting to see what his role is in the rebellion this season.

Orson Krennic and the Death Star

The post-credits scene of season 1 revealed that the machine parts that Cassian and the other prisoners of Narkina 5 were for the production of the Death Star. And in this trailer we not only see a glimpse of this massive weapon under construction, we also see the return of the mastermind behind the project, Orson Krennic. In Rogue One, Krennic is willing to do whatever it takes to move ahead in the Empire, and it’s doubtful that his stance is much different in the years leading up to those events. If Dedra Meero (Denise Gough) and Krennic don’t end up at odds, each fighting to get rid of the rebels themselves, then they just might make a formidable team.

K-2SO

This trailer gives us yet another look at K-2SO, our favorite sassy robot (don’t tell B2EMO). While we still don’t know exactly how he and Cassian meet, this season is likely to give us insight into how this partnership and eventual friendship came to be.

Mon Mothma Dancing?

While a lot of the sneak peeks mentioned previously are new looks at things we already knew were coming, there is one new and intriguing part of this trailer that has us really excited. Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) appears to be at a party of some sort, full of dancing and merriment. We even get to see her dance along at one point. It looks like this is some kind of Chandrilan celebration, potentially a pre or post wedding event for her daughter, who she began to arrange a marriage for last season. This was necessary for Mon Mothma to gain the trust of a banking official who could help her keep her finances (especially those secretly funding the rebellion) clean in the eyes of the Empire. It was clear that this was a hard choice for her, given how unhappy she is in her own arranged marriage, but nevertheless it seems like she had to go through with it, and may still be regretting it.

Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture Novel Shows a Very Different Vision of the Trek Universe

For a franchise whose core tenet is exploring the unknown, the universe of Star Trek is extremely well mapped out. Following the events described by its TV shows and movies, we can create a pretty comprehensive timeline of events from last year (the year of the Bell Riots, Irish reunification and the first crewed mission […]

Dune 3 Cast Rumor Just Set Up a Controversial Dune Messiah Storyline

This post contains spoilers for Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah. Paul Atreides wasn’t the only one sad to see Duncan Idaho die while battling Sardaukar troops in Dune. Audiences also mourned the loss of Idaho’s performer Jason Momoa, whose carefree attitude lightened the sometimes too-heavy mood. While everyone else is brooding about prophecies and land rights, […]

Up until now, we’ve been thoroughly teased by sneak peeks of the upcoming second season of Andor. From interviews with the cast to small glimpses in Disney’s 2025 preview, there have been a decent amount of crumbs to keep us excited for the story to come. Today, however, we’ve finally been served a full trailer outside of D23, and there’s a lot here that leaves us hungry for more.

cnx.cmd.push(function() {

}).render(“0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796”);
});

How Doctor Who Books Formed a Path to Writing the TV Show

Between 1990 and 2005, when Doctor Who wasn’t on TV, the show mostly existed as original novels. When Russell T. Davies, Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter brought it back in 2005, several of the show’s new screenwriters were chosen from the writers of those spin-off books, including Davies and future showrunner Steven Moffat. While they […]

Dope Girls is not your grandma’s historical drama (unless of course, your grandma has lived a life, has good taste in TV, and frankly, could do with a bit more respect and a bit less condescension from people assuming that she won’t be able to watch anything that isn’t presented by Alan Titchmarsh).

To try again then, Dope Girls is no Downton Abbey. It might be set in the same time period, but this tale of Soho women dancing with danger, death and well, other dancers in the nightclubs where they work is a world away from the genteel intrigues of the Earl of Grantham.

With a cast including actors from the US, Australia and the UK, here’s who’s playing who in BBC One’s new Saturday night series.

}).render(“0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796”);
});

Eliza Scanlen as Violet Davies

Violet is a new recruit to the Metropolitan police service hoping to be chosen for “The Female Experiment” in which women were first made officers in the UK. She’s tough, alone and has nothing to lose, which makes her a dangerous prospect.

She’s played by Australian actor Eliza Scanlen, whose breakout roles came in HBO’s 2018 adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects, and in Greta Gerwig’s 2019 feature film Little Women, in which Scanlen played second-to-youngest March sister Beth. She’s recently appeared opposite Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa in this year’s National Theatre production of The Importance of Being Earnest.

Julianne Nicholson as Kate Galloway

A brunette woman in a black coat in BBC One's Dope Girls

Kate is cruelly forced to find her own way after she loses her job, and has to go to extreme lengths to provide a living for her and her teenage daughter Evie, a clever girl with the potential to be among the first women in the UK to go to university.

She’s played by US actor Julianne Nicholson, who’s currently appearing as the wealthy Sinatra in Disney/Hulu political thriller Paradise (which has just been renewed for a second season). She’s known for Law & Order, The Outsider, having played Esther in Boardwalk Empire, Lillian in Masters of Sex and Lorri in the first season of Kate Winslet-starring crime drama Mare of Easttown.

Umi Myers as Billie Cassidy

Umi Meyers wearing a dress and fur coat in BBC One's Dope Girls

Billie is a Soho nightclub dancer who lives a bohemian, drink and drug-fuelled lifestyle with her singer friend Eddie Cobb. She’s played by Umi Myers, a recent graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, with previous stage parts and an appearance in Bob Marley: One Love. Dope Girls is Myers’ first television lead role.

Geraldine James as Isabella Salucci

Geraldine James in a blue dress in BBC One's Dope Girls

The matriarch of the fearsome Salucci crime family, Isabella is a ruthless survivor who’s held her clan together through the War and much more. She’s played by Geraldine James, a familiar face on screen and stage who’s had a long and healthy career going back to the late 1970s. To some TV viewers, she’ll always be indivisible from the part of Sarah in The Jewel in the Crown, to others, she’ll be best recognised as Rose from Band of Gold, Milner in Channel 4’s Utopia, Mrs Hudson in the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes films, and Marissa in Anne With an E, to name just a few.

Dustin Demri-Burns as Damaso Salucci

Dustin Demri-Burns wearing a dark suit in BBC One's Dope Girls

A Salucci son, Damaso is a member of a powerful Soho crime family, and has a terrifying brutal side. He’s played by Dustin Demri-Burns, who’s well known for comedy roles in Cardinal Burns, Stath Lets Flats, GameFace and Am I Being Unreasonable?, but has an equally healthy career in dramas with a comedic edge from The Great to Slow Horses, Britannia, Sweetpea and The Decameron.

Ian Bonar as Sgt Frank Turner

A profile of Ian Bonar's face in BBC One's Dope Girls

Sgt Turner is helping to run The Female Experiment, which saw the UK’s first female police officers. He’s a complicated man who doesn’t wield his power well, and makes an early enemy of Violet. He’s played by Ian Bonar, who recently appeared opposite Peter Capaldi in Apple TV+’s Criminal Record, as well as roles across various TV genres, from I May Destroy You to New Blood, Vera and many more.

Fiona Button as Sophie Asquith-Gore

Fiona Button wearing a white and green dress in BBC One's Dope Girls

The wife of a wealthy and important government minister, and the mother to Evie’s friend Alice, Sophie is grieving the brother she lost in the war, and thinks that she can still speak to him via a medium. She’s played by actor-director Fiona Button, who’s known for the role of Rose Defoe in Abi Morgan’s legal drama The Split, and was recently seen as Denise in series three of Industry, as well as in Grantchester, Out of Her Mind, and plenty of theatre productions.

Nabhaan Rizwan as Silas Huxley

Nabhaan Rizwan in BBC One's Dope Girls

Medium and occultist Silus Huxley takes money from the wealthy to help them contact their dead. He’s played by Nabhaan Rizwan, who recently played Dionysus in Netflix’s KAOS, as well as appearing opposite his brother Mawaan Rizwan in his sitcom Juice, and in the US playing Frank in Station Eleven, after his breakout role in 2018’s BBC crime drama Informer.

Will Keen as Frederick Asquith-Gore

A powerful government minister who’s set on rooting out the rot in London’s seedy nightclubs, Frederick Asquith-Gore is played by screen and stage actor Will Keen (incidentally, the father of Logan and His Dark Materials’ Dafne Keen), who recently appeared in BBC drama Wolf Hall as Thomas Cranmer, as well as playing Lord Belzagar in the second season of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Norfolk in My Lady Jane, the Queen’s private secretary in The Crown, and David in Ridley Road, as well as appearing in feature film Operation Mincemeat and more.
